A Cikin Rayuwa
Part One
By Zainab Bature (Zeelaluh)
A Cikin Rayuwa follows Salma Bashir, a bright young girl whose love of learning helps her rise above difficult circumstances. The story opens at a school graduation ceremony, where Salma’s exceptional performance earns her prizes, admiration, and the attention of influential adults. Her success stands in contrast to the hardships faced by a girl in the family drama performed at the event: a neglected daughter denied schooling who fights to learn and build a better future. As Salma’s own life unfolds, the support of Aunty Kubra becomes increasingly important, while her encounters with people such as Deen and Dr Hisham bring new emotional complications. Salma is determined to protect her education and avoid distractions, yet the expectations placed on her begin to include questions of affection, marriage, and family responsibility. Moving between tender conversations, domestic tensions, ambition, and difficult choices, the novel explores how upbringing, opportunity, love, and fate shape a young woman’s path. It is a character-driven story about striving for a meaningful life without losing sight of one’s principles.
