Afaaf and Afrah are identical twins whose close bond does not prevent them from having very different temperaments. Afaaf, known as Lulu, is outspoken, stubborn, and determined to resist the demands of her new Islamic-school teacher, Gwani Affan, especially when he announces that her class will begin memorising Qur’anic passages. Afrah, or Didi, is gentler and more patient, often trying to calm her sister and keep peace at home. Around them is a lively family whose affection, discipline, teasing, and expectations shape the girls’ daily lives. As the story broadens, other households and relationships come into view, including Areef—known as Bad Man—a privileged young man whose confidence, restlessness, drinking, and contempt for poorer people reveal tensions beneath his polished family life. Meanwhile, Kaseem pursues a young girl through her mother despite her father’s wish that she complete secondary school first. With religious study, family authority, class differences, and complicated personal attachments all colliding, A Jini Take follows several intertwined lives as youthful defiance and adult expectations begin to produce serious consequences.
