A Rubuce Take
Part One
By Billyn Abdul
A Rubuce Take follows Widad, a sheltered and easily frightened young woman whose pampered upbringing has left her dependent on the grandmother she calls Ummu. In the family home, her childish fears and need for reassurance make her a target for Halimatu’s sharp criticism, even as Latifa and Ummu continue to protect her. Widad’s uneasy relationship with Yaya Mahfood hints at feelings she does not understand and a devotion he has carried for years. Later, she finds herself living with Abbas as his wife, facing a new household whose routines and expectations overwhelm her. Abbas tries to be patient, caring for her and drawing her into ordinary domestic life, but his affection and Widad’s fear do not always meet comfortably. Meanwhile, Hafsat watches the changing balance between them with growing suspicion and resentment. Moving between family tensions, youthful vulnerability, and a complicated marriage, the novel explores how affection, control, jealousy, and protection can become difficult to distinguish.
