Bakar Masarauta
Part One
By Umar Faruq D
Bakar Masarauta opens across several imagined Hausa realms shaped by sharply opposing beliefs and systems of power. Wasai is a prosperous Muslim kingdom with influential rulers and busy trade, while Kagul and the Fulɗe kingdom are dominated by pastoral wealth, rigid customs, and occult practices. Beyond them lies Karfuz, a land where Islam is unknown and the ruling Bakar Masarauta has made cruelty, sacrifice, and bloodshed instruments of authority. The story then follows a terrifying encounter on the water, where Aishatu and the passengers of her boat are intercepted by the forces of King Barbaru and a fire-wielding sorcerer. Their demand for male infants turns the journey into a desperate struggle for survival. Elsewhere, the narrative shifts forward to Asad and Al’amin, now wealthy young men studying at Oxford after years of change. Their privileged lives, contrasting morals, and royal connections suggest that the violence and secrets of the kingdoms will continue to shape their futures.
