A Garin Mu
Part One
By Billyn Abdul
Set in Gusau, Zamfara, A Garin Mu follows the privileged children of Governor Halliru as they struggle with expectations that wealth and status have placed around their lives. Sultana, an educated young woman who longs to work and serve her country, finds herself drawn to Lawwali, a driver whose place in her family’s social world makes their relationship unacceptable to her mother. As Sultana’s feelings deepen, her parents begin arranging a different future for her, including a marriage chosen to protect the family’s reputation and standing. Her brother Sultan is also confronted with plans made on his behalf, while the household’s powerful connections become entangled with a serious threat involving Mubaraka. Alongside the governor’s family, the novel portrays working-class homes marked by quarrels, hardship, marriage tensions and complicated loyalties. Faith, family control, class difference and personal choice repeatedly collide as the characters try to protect the people they love. The story builds an emotionally charged picture of Hausa Muslim family life, where private promises can challenge even the strongest authority.
