A Jini Take Izzata
Part One
By Billyn Abdul
Afaaf and Afrah are strikingly identical twins, but their personalities could hardly be more different. Afaaf, known as Lulu, is quick-tempered and determined to resist anything that challenges her independence, while Afrah, or Didi, tries to calm her sister and keep peace at home. When their Islamic school assigns a new teacher, Affan, Afaaf’s refusal to begin Qur’anic memorisation brings her into direct conflict with both him and her parents. As the story unfolds, family life introduces further tensions: a wealthy young man called Areef, or Bad Man, avoids responsibility and struggles with habits he has tried to put aside, while relatives debate his future. Elsewhere, Kaseem presses Mami to help him pursue a much younger girl despite her father’s wish that she complete secondary school first. The novel moves between school, home and extended-family relationships, exploring pride, discipline, parental authority, youthful attraction and the pressures hidden beneath comfortable households. Its lively dialogue and contrasting characters create a drama whose conflicts are only beginning to deepen.
