Zaytoonah Part One moves between family life, faith, culture and the pressures of marriage. It opens in 1985, when Patrick, Caroline and their daughter Mary-Nkiru visit Okwuohia Village for the Mbom-uzo festival. At the same time, T.J., a Muslim corps member teaching in the area, is seized by villagers who accuse him of breaking sacred customs. His survival depends on the intervention of Nnadozie and a tense clash between traditional authority and government power. The story later turns to Zaytoonah and Zuhayr, whose relationship is tested by family expectations, jealousy and troubling changes in Zuhayr’s health. A suspicious conversion by Ben adds another layer of uncertainty, while preparations for a family wedding bring relatives together and expose old resentments. As Zaytoonah becomes more closely involved with Zuhayr’s family, affection and domestic intimacy sit alongside secrets, religious differences and questions about whom to trust. The journey ahead promises further strain as family visits and competing loyalties complicate the couple’s plans.
